Parents:

If you’re considering a tutor for your child, it’s probably because they’re not able to keep up with their class work and are falling behind. They might not want to go to school. They might have even told you that they think they’re “dumb” or “stupid” and you KNOW that’s not the case.

Like many good parents, you might have even tried to help them yourself, but were less than successful. That’s actually pretty common – for a parent NOT to be able to help their own children with their school work. Why is that? From my experience, it’s because your children don’t see you as a teacher – they see you as Mom or Dad. This is even true for children for teachers! Two of the statements on my testimonials page were written by teachers – fully capable of teaching the subject matter, but not to their own children.

It’s not their teacher’s “fault” that your child is not doing well in school. I’ve been in the classroom since 1991, and I know that teachers do their very best to teach all of their students. Sometimes they teach to the whole group, and sometimes they split the class into small groups for more individualized instruction. But, they just don’t have the time to teach to the needs of every child in their class. I DO have that time. I will come to your home and work with your child one-on-one.

Every teacher has their “specialties”, and mine are Math and Reading. What I can do as a licensed teacher is find out where your child is “stuck” and help them develop the skills they need to improve in that subject. I will teach your child they way they need to learn, and I will use whatever materials are necessary to help them understand what they are trying to learn.

To assist me in determining how I can help your child do better in school, I will also contact the person who already knows how your child learns - your child’s teachers.  Most teachers I’ve contacted are more than willing to let me know what they would like to be able to do for your child, if they only had the time!  Some teachers have even provided me with worksheets and other materials that the class has already worked on so I can help the student with things they don’t quite understand.  I’ve also received materials the class has not worked on yet, so I can work with the student during track breaks.

I’ve found it most effective to work with students one hour a day, twice a week. I can come just after they get home from school, or in the evenings or weekends, depending on what works best for them and you. My fee runs from $40.00 – 50.00 an hour, depending on how far I have to travel. That’s a lot of money to most people, but what’s it worth to you to have your child understand what they are learning in class and have a much better attitude towards school – and themselves?

In addition to working with students after school and on weekends during the time they are going to school, parents of elementary students who go to “year round” schools should also consider taking advantage of track breaks and/or the summer break.  Just think of how much your child could improve by working one-on-one with a tutor just one hour a day, two or three times a week during the time they are “off” from school.  I’m sure arrangements could be made for tutoring at a convenient time, and when the tutoring session is over, the rest of the time is theirs to enjoy!

If you’re interested in hiring me as a tutor, please call me at 274-4322. I don’t answer my phone if I’m tutoring someone, but I will get back to you as soon as possible.

If I am not personally able to fit you into my schedule, I know a lot of teachers who are interested in tutoring. I will contact someone who lives close to you and they will contact you to set up a schedule.
